Biography

Samuel Euston has been recently described as a multi-talented, driven, limitless vista of creativity. Best known for his impressive skills as an acoustic guitarist and vocalist, he has gained significant respect as both a composer and songwriter. He's continually experimenting with new styles, instruments and recording techniques and appears to never run out of inspiration.

He feels most at home strumming on strings, drums and keyboards in his rustic country studio (cats and horses periodically giving their opinion!), jotting down thoughts and feelings and hugging those he loves. All of these things inspire his recordings and feed his endless passion and spirit.

Having grown up in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, in a very poor family where the constant struggle to survive was the norm, listening to music was what brought light to his days. Here began the patchwork of musical experiences which matured into a musician who can beautifully communicate the magic in music for the enjoyment of all.

Sam's musical adventures began at the age of four. He heard several Franz List's Hungarian Rhapsodies. He readily mastered the use of the family phonograph and wore out the $1.49 vinyl record he was given of List's Hungarian Rhapsodies. They lifted him away from the reality of poverty and into the carnival of sound, symphony and rhythm. This initial experience re-molded his view of what could be. Currently, one of Sam loves is to compose on his mahogany and gold Bosendorfer piano, the piano of choice for Franz List.

Sam was also exposed to the Big Bands (by way of recordings),and became a fan of the Dorsey Brothers, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Artie Shaw, Andrew Sisters, Count Basie, and the list goes on. He has come a very long way from his early years, and is acquainted with the impact of a touch of inspiration.

Other early recordings opened up the classical worlds of Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Ravel and more.

A benefit of early grade school was Sam's discovery that he could sing. Comfortably a tenor, but with his extended range: able to sing baritone and sometimes alto and soprano, the choir master often had Sam sing soprano to keep the girl's voices on key, until his voice changed. Early performances were as varied as glee club and choir which would perform at church functions, and Sam's fifth grade rock band "The Dry Sud" playing 'G-L-O-R-I-A', 'House of the Rising Sun' and 'We Gotta Get Out of This Place', along with Beatles favorites, for school events.

When life circumstances threw Sam into quickly becoming a mature adult at the tender age of 13, this precocious young man made the best of it. Only two years later he had his own place in Manhattan and was working for UNICEF at the United Nations . Having never felt quite at home in the East, a move to Marin County, California was in order and Sam immediately knew he was Home. A few heavenly years followed at the College of Marin, where Sam expanded his music horizons with Classical and Jazz input from teachers who were active in the music business and fellow students destined for fame. Sam, in honing his skills as a guitarist, added music theory to his skill set, and enhanced his vocal skills by studying with John and Cathy Hudnal, along with Martin Frick. In his twenties, Sam decided he wanted to be a touring musician and joined the rock band "Crystal Cane" as a drummer and singer. Successful tours of Oregon, Washington and Idaho followed.

A subsequent band, Pegasus toured even further North to Alaska. The incredibly pure air, pristine green forests and northern lights were invigorating and inspiring. The band quickly built a great reputation and enjoyed the experience and exposure in Sitka, Jeauno, Ketchican and later back down into Canada.

A later tour with the duo, Renfield, landed him in Thule, Greenland, in the Autumn, with its very cold subzero temperatures . While the snow fell unceasingly, tripling the time of the tour, the enlisted men on the high strategic air force base enjoyed hearing their favorite top tunes from the States and Britain LIVE from Sam and Company. Sam later wrote of his experience in the song 'Thule', which got Greenland and East Coast airplay. An Alabama tour was next, playing to reportedly unprecedented packed houses. Then back home to Marin.

More recent years have included a couple solo albums and family business matters, always with at least the backdrop of music lighting the way. Sam is a creative "music machine" and the song children just keep arriving. They are mre than "just tunes", for Sam's music is so interwoven into his very being and he sees music as uplifting and healing, as well as lots of fun.

Sam shares the story regarding the song he wrote in 1983 entitled "Burning": It's a metaphoric tale about a wizard whose job is to share with others how they can discover the natural magic of their internal fire. As they learn and nurture, seek, confront their fears and follow their heart's journey; the distillation process results in their dreams coming true. But he's greatly challenged for it's been a path that many no longer seek, and so he's turned to moving the waves of air (through song), that can reach farther than he. The primary purpose of the wizard in this lifetime, is to re-kindle the internal flames that have been growing dimmer as the peoples' experience (for many reasons - both known and unknown) of their personal magic erodes and fades. If he can just get them to gaze into his eyes and see his internal fire (for life), it will help rekindle their own, and they can then help to rekindle others around them as well.

Enjoy this latest instrumental compilation, a drift away from his usual; a soothing healing, harmonious, musical journey echoing Sam's early classical training and evoking the magic of Northern California's West Coast.
